VIJAYANAGAR KINGDOM
-----------------------------------------
Around middle 14th century Karnataka kings with center as Vijayanagar organised resistance to muslim invasion. Vijayanagar armies reconquered this region and liberated SRIRANGAM Temple. The statues of Gods exciled at TIRUPATI were restored. Rich benefactors, princes, dignitaries and officials presented the temple with lands and vilages. The work of restoration continued for long time and the temple received magnificient endowments until the collapse of HINDU kingdom of VIJAYANAGAR.

The present shape of the temple took place in 15th and 16th centuries. The vimana was rebuilt, a new statue of bird GARUDA in copper replaced the original one destroyed in muslim invasion. Many sanctuaries were restored and gopuras rebuilt. The Dhwaja stambam was covered with 102 gold plates. There are records of cows, gardens and many villages (52 in 1371, 292 around 1490, 5 in 1516). Large sums of money in gold and gold objects were donated to temple for use in daily worship. Important religious festivals were instituted and restored, some of them even TODAY bear the names given in 15 th century.
