The temple of SRIRANGAM is an important place in religious INDIA, as most active place of VAISHNAVISM that flourished in south during 7th-13th centuries. The place is referred in ancient tamil works Silappadikaram (3rd century), Nalayaram (7th century).

EAST INDIA COMPANY

In 1801 Carnatic passed into the control of English East India company. Srirangam temple came under the jurisdiction of collector John Wallace. In 1803 Wallace brought together the existing chronicles and compiled into single version, bearing seal of FIVE stanattars (administrators). STABILITY RETURNED TO TEMPLE.

The prince of Wales King Edward VII visited the temple in 1875 and donated a large gold cap, which is still a part of treasure.

After proclamation of independant India in 1947, temples and religious congregations came under new legislation. In 1966 UNESCO decided to provide technical assistance to the temple and sent an expert, followed by two more in 1968.

THE TEMPLE OF SRI RANGANTHA AT SRIRANGAM IS NOW A UNIVERSAL HERITAGE SITE AND CONTINUE TO HELP PILGRIMS AND DEVOTEES.
