Importance - AdiSesha created this shrine, hence the name Tiruvahindrapuram. Garudan is said to have created the Virajaa Theertham (Garuda Nadi) while Adi Seshan is said to have created the Sesha Theertham (Paatala Gangai). Legend also has it that Vishnu was worshipped by Markandeya and Bhudevi. Vedanta Desika spent forty years in this town and meditated upon Garuda on the Aushadagiri and obtained the image from Hayagreeva from him. |

Importance - This is a vast temple. Vishnu took the form of Vamana and became enormous form covering earth and heavens. Bali offered his head as the resting point for his third foot. Vishnu banished Bali to the netherworld and eliminated Rakshasa vriddhi. Three Mudal Alwars (Poikaialwar, Bhutattalwar and Peyalwar) took shelter in the hermitage of Mrikandu munivar who was worshipping Vishnu here. In cramped shelter in stormy night. Then they felt the overwhelming fourth person none other than Perumaal. They composed a hundred verses in praise of Lord. This is where the first verses of the Alwars came into being.
