After the Sri RAMA pattabhiskekam, this image was gifted to VIBHISHANA for his worship. However he could not carry to LANKA. Kamba Ramayana also started here.

Importance - This is birth place of Thiruppana Alwar. This was once ancient capital of Chola kings, now part of Thiruchirapalli. Kamalavalli Nachchiyar, daughter of chola king meditated on Vishnu and married to Him. The king built a temple with its doors facing north (SRIRANGAM). In the month Palguni image of Lord Sriranganatha was brought from Srirangam and Kalyanam is performed. Legend - A Violant rooster, believed to have warded off an elephant with its beak at Urayur, hence name Thirukkoli (Mookkeeswaram)
