Lord Vishnu Exists in FIVE different forms. As transcendental deity, He is known as PARA VASUDEVA and dwells in heaven  Vaikuntha attended by divine mothers Sridevi and Bhudevi and votaries who have become immortal (nityasuri). In his emanation (vyuha), He is MAHA VISHNU and  rests on serpent of eternity, Adisesha attended by same Godesses and votaries. He comes near Man in his incarnations (avatara), thus in all TEN AVATHARAS. Next  He dwells in every being in the form of ANTHARYAMI. His presence can only be vaguely felt by individual. Lastly in images He appears and dwells in his sanctuaries 108 Divyadesams where Alwars sang pasurams and experienced Him as ARCHAMURTHI

This is the foremost temple for all Srivaishnavas. Belongs to Vaishnava tradition. Devotion (Bhakti) is a sign of respect towards the deity, rather a feeling of love. God's  intense love for man and the equally intense love of the devotee for his God is eminent. The most intelligent, Adi Sankaracharya (believed as a gift from GOD to human race) spread this movement (8th century), later continued and developed by his disciple Bhagavad Ramanuja (11th century). Bhagavad Ramanuja, an  outstanding figure of Sri Vaishnavism, taught in the temple of Sri Ranganatha swamy at Srirangam. Bhagavad Ramanuja is the incarnation of Adisesha (one of the  nityasuris), has given the TIRU MANTHRAM to all risking hell to himself. His Guru embraced him and called him EMBERUMAN (my God) on this and Ramanuja  became Bhagavad. Ramanuja is also known as UDAIYAVAR in tamil. Bhagavad Ramanuja preached need for rituals and salvation through devotion to Lord Vishnu. One cannot attain God, one cannot see Him, and one cannot have full knowledge about Him. One can only hope for his future manifestations.
BUT IT IS POSSIBLE TO VENERATE HIM IN HIS SHRINE.This is the deep significance of piligrimage to SRIRANGAM
